This highly detailed drawing in a vertical format depicts the interior of a gothic cathedral looking up at the soaring rib-vaulted ceiling. It appears as though every brick and architectural detail is rendered. The image provides a view into the choir and a transept to the right, which is decorated with a very ornate rose window. <br />

The vertical rectangular space of the image is completely filled with a detailed rendering of a section of an intricate Gothic portal façade. In the foreground a checked tile floor creates a recession into the space. In the center of the composition two doors are framed by a high, pointed arch. The space of the arch is filled with fine cut-out ornamental stonework. Arched niches containing figural sculptures flank each side of the main archway, and one also separates the two doors. The top of the image is framed by two rows of geometric ornamental decor. <br /> Beneath the image is an ornamental panel of simulated marble, on which the title of the image is written in gothic script: "Eglise Notre Dame / Les Andelys".<br /> Signed and dated: "John Taylor Arms / 1946"

This drawing depicts part of a large, Gothic-style church with lancet windows and buttresses, seen at night. Around the exterior of the building are two trees, a lamppost, four bollards, and a person seen in silhouette. A light source outside the image illuminates part of the church’s large arched window, and casts long shadows that fall to the left side of the composition. <br /> Inscribed on the recto, in pencil, in the image, “M. Bone / Amsterdam”

This image builds up from a densely packed lower foreground, comprised of a tree and sloping rooftops littered with chimneys. A church tower, surrounded by birds, rises against a blank sky in the top center of the image, forming an overall pyramidal composition that leads the viewer&rsquo;s eye up. The roofs of the houses in the foreground seem to waver with unevenly laid shingles, indicating that this is an old village. The church tower combines a gothic-style rose window and pointed arches with rounded windows and a much less ornately ornamented belltower, all more characteristic of Romanesque and Renaissance styles than Gothic.<br /> The style of etching combines both precise descriptive detail and more summary, sketchy renderings.&nbsp;Title in pencil, lower left of margin. Signed and dated in pencil right of center below platemark: &quot;John Taylor Arms, 1932&quot;.
